June 2007

June sees us busier than ever.

It is also a month in which we have seen lots of dogs with either sarcoptic or domodectic mange. It is not fox mange as is often described by clients but dog mange. Dogs passed it on to foxes in the first place. If left untreated it can have devastating results.

Here we see Tess, a Warwick surgery regular having a bath. We're not just getting her clean but treating her for demodectic mange. See how she has lost hair around her eyes and muzzle? The liquid preparation used in bathing kills the mange. It is stinky stuff and has to stay on the skin for several minutes to do its job. Often clients find it difficult to do this treatment at home, so we can do it in the surgery.

Mange is diagnosed by a skin scrape where we look under the microscope at a sample of skin debris to identify the mange mites among it. There is a successful spot-on treatment and preventative but we find this is more useful for sarcoptic mange. We suspect mange when a dog has hair loss, like Tess' and they are pink and itchy. It is often first seen as hair loss around the back leg area too. Tess will make a full recovery and is meanwhile enjoying her visits to the surgery. She is a very, very ebulient and friendly staffi who likes a good play and fuss so we have fun at the same time as getting rid of her mange.
Warwick also does more than the average rabbit consultations.

Here we can see a giant rabbit (no, its not small people and equipment!) being prepared for a routine spay. The monitoring equipment seen tells the anaesthetist (Veterinary nurse) the pulse rate and oxygenation during the anaesthetic. The bubble wrap and tin foil keep the animal at the correct temperature during the op, they are also on a heater pad during and after surgery for a comfortable recovery. We also see the vet performing the spay by removing the womb and ovaries. This means that the rabbit cannot breed and will have a longer life-span.

We have also seen lots and lots of puppies in for baby check-overs and their first vaccinations. This is a very important part of our role to ensure that the littlies are healthy and set on their way with a puppy pack with info about all the vagueries of dog ownership. We make a point of offering free worm and flea preparations, a month's free comprehensive pet insurance and correctly balanced diet suitable for the individual. There's lots to know about sharing your home with a dog, especially if you're a first time owner. We are here to help with all aspects of this. Ideally we would like to talk to people BEFORE they acquire a dog to give suggestions on which type will be most suitable to share your lifestyle. Please call us if you would like any advice on this. We have full details available of many, many resuce centres with thousands of dogs to choose from (including pedigrees).

Here we see two toy breed dogs who have just been microchipped. The RSPCA in Rugby ran a June initiative for free microchipping for clients on benefits. We had a BIG run on microchipping this month. Microchips are available at any time and any animal can have one. It is an excellent form of I.D. and if you would like more information please see our web-site I.D. section for details. Here is another client who has had a free RSPCA microchip for one of their many animals. Hugh is checking the microchip number after implantation on their young german shepherd cross puppy. We check the number of the chip in its packaging, and confirm that it corresponds with the paperwork and sticky labels. After implantation we check again, just for accuracy standards. Don't forget that your microchip is only as good as accurate contact details. Make sure you keep the chip company up to date with any new phone numbers or address you have.

Our polo team have entered lots of tournaments this month, but like Wimbledon, a lot of it was rained off-very unusual. We will keep you up to date with the polo play on our dedicated polo pages.

Thank you to all our clients who send in lovely letters and cards to thank us for our work. It always makes us feel great when someone has taken the time and effort to do this. We really appreciate it. We have decided to display all our cards and letters in a coffee table book so other clients can see. Yes, this is us showing off a bit, but seriously, it will reassure new clients that they are seeing people who others are pleased with and make them feel secure.

A big thanks to everyone who came to see us in June and roll on July.
