DO YOU HAVE A DOG OR CAT WHO REACTS BADLY TO STRESS?
Noisy fireworks, visiting kennels, introducing a new pet, all these things and more can create stress for your pet that can result in unhappy and inappropriate behaviours.
There are several products which can help in reducing your pets' stress including a relatively new one which we have used with great success called, 'ZYLKENE'
Zylkene is a nutroceutical based on modified caseine which when digested works in the same part of the brain that uses Valium. It therefore has a similar calming effect to that of a high grade medication but differs in being non prescription, non addictive with no side effects.
It comes in the form of a capsule that is taken daily in food or as a treat. Where a stressful event is predicted one should also be taken the day before. Use can be stopped as soon as the stress has gone.
New, irregular stresses like Guy Fawkes night, Diwali, noisy building work, a large family visit and hosting loud parties can be predicted. So can visits to kennels, travelling and introducing a new baby or other pet. There are other stresses which we can see only when they have already begun and have had a negative effect. These can come with a pet that has been re-homed and has brought that stress with them and where there is no stress that we can see. Zylkene has been used sucessfully with these different types of stress. It is particularly useful in cases of over-grooming and in cats with idiopathic cystitis. Typical cases of this type of stress use a two week course of one capsule daily.
Zylkene is routinely used alongside behavioural advice and other anti-stress aids such as Feliway or D.A.P. pheromone sprays and diffusers.
It has been used well with fearful dogs and can help a dog be calm enough to un-learn bad behaviours. This has been useful in excessive barking, house soiling and separation anxiety.
Zylkene has been widely used in France since 2006 so we have lots of field trial evidence of its success and lack of side effects. It is not licensed for use in equines but we know through anecdotal evidence that it has been used in France to calm a horse before a visit from the blacksmith or dentist. We await trials in this area before we would recommend its use even though the science behind it suggests that it should be harmless.
Zylkene is available over the counter-you do not need to see a vet although often veterinary advice can be useful if you have a specific medical condition to consider. You can request this at reception and we can give you the appropriate ammount immediately. If you choose to phone we can prepare Zylkene ready for your collection.
